Glenaladale Heritage Trust is developing a Scottish Culture and Research Centre within Glenaladale Schoolhouse, 257 Blooming Point Road, Tracadie Cross, PEI.

Efforts to date comprise a library for Scottish and Prince Edward Island history, including family histories, and Scottish Culture Days.

The Trust is grateful for the donations of reading and research materials from many people. A recent addition is the research of the late Basil Campbell: a fully indexed database of relevant newspaper clippings going back as far as 1791 as well as a collection of Prince Edward Island census data along with his own ancestral history.

In order to retain this invaluable resource, Glenaladale Heritage Trust has graciously received permission from Basil's family to host the database here: https://glenaladalepei.com/caimbeul/

Tribute to Basil Campbell

Basil Campbell

In August of 2024, researchers of PEI's Scottish families lost a treasured resource with the passing of Basil Campbell. Basil was raised on the Island but spent his working career in Ottawa. In his spare time he spent years developing a fully indexed database of relevant newspaper clippings going back as far as 1791 as well as a collection of Prince Edward Island census data along with his own ancestral data.

In order to retain this invaluable resource, Glenaladale Heritage Trust has graciously received permission from Basil's family to host the database here: https://glenaladalepei.com/caimbeul/

Although Basil lived for many years in Ottawa, he maintained a close relationship with his Island friends and was a longtime member of PEI Scottish Settlers Historical Society and a champion of Glenaladale Heritage Trust. We shall miss him dearly and are eternally grateful his family has allowed us to continue his work by keeping his research available online and at our centre.

John Basil Campbell passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario on August 9, 2024. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (nee Gillis) Campbell and his sister Adele Campbell. Son of Penelope "Penzie" (nee MacDonald) and Joseph Campbell, he is survived by his siblings Catherine (Des, dec) MacNeill, Raymond (Inez) Campbell, Frances (Doug) Piercey and many nieces and nephews.

Basil was a graduate of St. Dunstan's University, University of Ottawa and received his PhD from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in Applied Mathematics. He was employed by the National Research Council in Ottawa.
After retirement, his passion in genealogical research provided invaluable information for families and genealogical societies across Canada and the USA. He was dedicated to his dogs Happy, Hogan, Sona 1 and 2.

We will always carry your memory in our hearts. You will be missed by all who knew and loved you.

I've been in touch with Basil for almost 20 years via email and then since 2015 on our secret PEI Facebook page. Was so happy I got to finally meet him in person at the 250th Glenaladale Settlers Anniversary. What a gentle man and a genealogical pioneer. We never did figure out how Angus MacKenzie m. Nancy McDonald fit into my tree. I will carry on that search for both of us.        Barbara McLeod

Basil was a favourite cousin and I cherish our time together. From the warm hospitality he and Mary provided in their home to exploring PEI back roads and cemeteries, spending time with Basil was special.    I will especially miss our “genealogy dinners” where, with food and laptops at the ready, we would exchange research, books, and family news. Basil’s infinite knowledge of family history helped me expand my own tree in all directions and along many lines.    My condolences to all the family on this great loss. May he rest in peace.        Denise Harper

My Sympathy to all family. Basil was my go-to for PEI Genealogy information. RIP       Gladys Holland
