Introduction to PEI Newspapers
A Key Surname in UPPER CASE is usually added to each item if not already present. For Scottish surnames beginning with Mac, Mc or M', the form beginning with MAC is used for the Key Surname. MC is used for Irish Mc surnames. To acccess a newspaper item, click on the year of the item on the right side of this page.
The articles in these pages were compiled over the past several years from microfolm reels at the National Library of Canada in Ottawa. A preliminary version of this collection of articles in Rich Text Format was distributed in the spring of 2002.
Usually, in the newspapers, the articles containing births are headlined by 'Birth', 'Born', etc.; the articles containing deaths are headlined by 'Death', 'Died', 'Obituary'. etc.; and the articles containing marriages are headlined by 'Marriage', 'Married', 'Wedding Bells', 'Hymeneal', etc. Births, deaths or marriages are labelled in 'PEI Newspapers' by BIRTH:, DEATH: and MARRIAGE:, respectively, with no comma after each label.
To view a News Item from a particular year, point and click that year in the menu on the right.
Multiple entries of the same article in different newspapers are usually included only once unless there are inconsistencies in the entries, for example, the following items are all included:
